The Ride and the View

Writing creative narrative for my nature photography can often represent a greater challenge than actually capturing the images. Sometimes it's easy to tell a story with them, other times it isn't as clear what I should write. I guess this particular photo essay is about morning sights, but that's not very original. As a kind of pilot, I suppose I might imagine you as a passenger on an airplane, looking out the window as I fly us above the clouds. To you, these photographs might appear like views of the countryside below:
  • The moon is in the bluest part of the morning sky.
  • Ruby-throated Hummingbird preens through dense tangle.
  • Black-throated Green Warbler searches a pinecone for insects.
  • Monarch Butterfly warms itself in the morning sun.
But what's actually going on in the cockpit? Tripod adjustments, white-balance check, light angle, compose, focus-lock, release, re-focus, adjust, move, check, shutter speed, exposure, exposure, exposure, post-processing, uploading, etc. Steps have been repeated thousands of times; the ride for me is a little different from yours.

It was a thought.

Anyway, enjoy the view!

Well, I thought part of what you wrote was down right poetic. Lovely pictures!

Love your thought and photos. Xpecially the Moon. Sometimes one forgets all the angles to appreciate the ride and view.

Hey Mike,
I like the price of your airline, especially since I'm not charged extra for all my "baggage"! It's nice to go for the ride sitting in PJs with a danish and caffeine at hand - cheaper and tastier than the expensive and bland "food" that must be purchased while flying these days. Loved your analogy!

As usual, the photos are outstanding. I especially loved the moon (Boy, digiscoping sure improves sky shots!) and the hummingbird. Most hummingbird shots capture the bird in flight or feeding. This is the first one I recall seeing preening in a tree. Made my day!

Hmm, just had an idea.....how about setting up a "frequent flyer" program? We, your readers, could accumulate points each time we visit and then redeem them for the right to "copy/paste" some of your photos?????!

It was a thought.

Anyway, I enjoyed the view! Thanks! :)

Beautiful words and interesting perspective...

The moon, I just shot it Tuesday morning. Mine wasn't as crisp-I was at work, went outside for a smoke, saw the beautiful moon hanging in the morning light, grabbed the camera from the car and shot away without a tripod. I'm jealous...You captured it perfectly!
